Benefits of Group Therapy

Group therapy might sound intimidating at first—sharing your problems with a bunch of strangers? But it turns out there's something really powerful about connecting with people who get what you're going through.

One of the biggest benefits is realizing you're not the only one struggling. When you hear someone else describe feelings you thought were weird or shameful, it's like a weight lifts off your shoulders. You start thinking, "Oh, I'm actually pretty normal after all."

Groups also give you a safe space to practice being yourself and trying out new ways of relating to people. Maybe you've always been the people-pleaser or the one who shuts down during conflict. In group, you can experiment with speaking up or setting boundaries without the real-world consequences.

There's something healing about helping others too. When you offer support or share your experience with someone else, it reminds you that you have wisdom and strength, even when you don't feel like it.

Plus, groups keep you accountable in a gentle way. It's harder to skip sessions or avoid doing the work when people notice and care about your progress. The relationships you build become part of the healing process itself.

“The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help.”

— Irving Yalom
